Photo critics Part #1, Ruven Afanador “Fashion”

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Today I’d like to present to you the works of one of the famous photographers - Ruven Afanador. From the start here is the URL to his portfolio http://www.art-dept.com/artists/afanador/index.html so you guys could follow up and agree or disagree with my critics. Today I will be reviewing only one photo session called “fashion”

Those who will be interested in his biography please feel free to use google :)

So let’s start with the fact that this piece of criticism will be absolutely subjective and reflect only authors personal point of view on Ruven Afanador’s works.

afanadorhero.jpg

The photo session starts with a mannequin theme where we can see combination of mannequins and models in make up that thematically suits the atmosphere of pictures. I think that by these 6 pictures Ruven sort of starts the main topic called “Fashion” with one of the main attributes that is a model and a dummy. It seems to me maybe somehow it represents the equality of the two but I would consider it to be offensive towards the model as a profession on one hand BUT on the other hand I see where he is going - these two have the same purpose and that’s the level where he equalizes them. Anyway let’s proceed with the next photographies.

Next 6 scenes are a lot different but still represent fashion. We can call it one of the aspects of fashion that is royal or we can say pompous. It is pretty obvious as we see the model in expensive dress, her haircut, castle on the background and of course an eagle that is pretty royal symbol to me and a horse. I can say that each scene is prepared professionally because the combination of dressing, surrounding and background seem pretty elegant, all of the attributes are on their exact places.

Proceeding further with the black and white pictures of a male model - I don’t really get it! I mean what is it? A part of Ruven’s tape that was not supposed to get to his portfolio? It’s hard to believe that these 6 photos can be related to fashion I mean maybe he wanted to slightly continue the royalty theme but guess what? it’s not there, the only thing in this part that can be considered good is the quality but not the idea.

Next 6 photos blow my mind. It’s industrial, psychedelic, futuristic and glamorous. I don’t want to go into a lot of needless details you just check it out. In comparison with the previous 4 pictures these are the combination of fresh idea and top quality.

Proceeding further we come across with strict glamor. You can tell it on the fly as the major colors here are white, gold and black, the others are not as dominating. As for me it looks even creepy as the model looks like a mummy or a patient after brain surgery.

Second page starts with 7 pictures. It is a combination of nu and glamor. In this part the model attracted my attention. Ruven uses not a mannequin type of model but a total opposite. She reminds me of woman image of Leonardo da Vinci period. The main streams of this part are tenderness, sensitivity and beauty and Ruven reflects it pretty clear.

Next is a science fiction and horror part. Models with aliens and monsters representing movie fashion and that’s pretty much it.

The following scenes negatively surprise me again. It looks like Mr. Afanador has some difficulties with picturing just male models or uses them when there is a lack of idea. I can’t get what is he trying to say there. I mean I know we are talking not about art here but about quality commercial photography and from what I know even here there should be sort of an idea. Enough about it NEXT!

There goes another two portions of glamor in a row. Something new? No. Quality? Yes.

At the end of the second page we can see something fresh. I think the idea of it is to show exotic and it works out pretty well. Fine model, professional makeup, cloths, background, surrounding every single details talk to you about exotic. It was a good idea to use african theme here, suits very good.

On the last page there is a mixture of photographies of straight glamor character and starts with hardcore glamor moves to some sort of flower maniac glamor then continues with techno glamor. Then goes chaos that I am still looking at trying to get a single thought but no success so far. Fashion ends with anime containing glamor again. Well what can I say isn’t glamor is still on the peak of fashion? I think yes.

Panasonic Lumix FS3 - 3x Optical zoom Leica lens
The 8.1-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3 packages a 33mm 3x optical zoom Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with f2.8 brightness into a slim, compact body. Comprising six elements in five groups, including three aspherical lenses with four aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit realizes the outstandingly slim and compact body yet passing Leica’s stringent standards to deliver an exceptional optical performance. Further, in 3-megapixel resolution mode, the Extra Optical Zoom function provides additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 4.8x by using the centre part of the CCD. The Easy Zoom feature shifts the lens instantly to full 3x optical zoom power at a touch of a dedicated button, and with a second touch, the zoom ratio is further extended to 4.8x by activating the Extra Optical Zoom function.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3 camera - Mega O.I.S.
Panasonic incorporated the Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) to compensate for hand-shake and Intelligent ISO Control to detect and suppress motion blur are built into all Lumix cameras, as the industry’s most advanced countermeasures against blurring. Both image stabilizing technologies have been further advanced in detection accuracy and correction effect thanks to the new image-processing LSI, Venus Engine IV.

Panasonic FS3 - Intelligent Auto mode & Intelligent Scene Selector
In addition to these two paramount anti-blurring technologies, Panasonic continues pursuing the ideal that anyone at any technical level of photography should be able to take beautiful pictures with ease, by incorporating the Intelligent Auto mode. Increasing the number of scene modes is one thing and taking advantage of them is another, and that’s where the Intelligent Scene Selector comes in. It automatically sets the appropriate scene mode according to the scene you’re going to take from among the most frequently used scene modes, such as Portrait, Scenery, Macro, Night Scenery and Night Portrait mode. The Face Detection system helps the camera to recognize human faces and to focus and set the exposure automatically. Up to 15 faces can be recognized simultaneously. The Quick AF system allows the camera to keep focusing on the subject even without pressing the shutter button halfway, to get the best results from every shooting opportunity by minimizing the AF time. These multi-capable functions happen automatically, so you can shoot without the bother of adjusting settings every time conditions change - the powerful Intelligent Auto Mode does all the work for you. You can enjoy easy, trouble-free shooting in any situation and get the satisfaction that comes with capturing clear, beautiful images.

00390_panasonic-lumix-fs3.jpg

Panasonic Lumix FS3 - New image-processing LSI
A new image-processing LSI, Venus Engine IV, features more advanced signal processing technology for rendering even higher-quality images. Notably, parallel noise reduction in both luminance signal and chromatic signal processing systems, a technology established by the preceding Venus Engine III, gains a more sophisticated process. First, the luminance noise is two-dimensionally separated into high-frequency and low-frequency noises and only the low-frequency noise, which tends to be conspicuous, is eliminated without affecting the high-frequency noise that greatly influences resolution. Second, the information of the change point between colors is minutely stored for precise determination of edges, thus color bleeding is dramatically suppressed. This not only produces a clearer image in high ISO sensitivity recording, but also faithfully reproduces details in low-lit areas of pictures taken at low ISO sensitivity.

Panasonic DMC-FS3 - Venus Engine IV processor
The Venus Engine IV also elevates the detection accuracy and corrective effect in both Mega O.I.S., which prevents hand-shake, and Intelligent ISO Control, which suppresses motion blur. Featured in the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3, the multi-task image-processing engine Venus Engine IV supports a super-fast response time. The shutter release time lag is as short as 0.005 second and the camera’s quick response makes it easier to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. In burst shooting mode, the Panasonic FS3 can snap 3 shots per second at full resolution. And in High-Speed Burst shooting mode, it fires off an incredible 7 shots per second. You also get unlimited consecutive shooting, which lets you keep shooting until the memory card is full. The Venus Engine IV also supports a High Sensitivity mode that lets the Panasonic Lumix FS3 record at a setting of up to ISO 6400, sensitive enough to capture subjects in near-total darkness without using a flash.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3 - 2.5-inch LCD screen
The Panasonic DMC FS3 incorporate an easy-to-see, large, 2.5-inch 230,000-dot high-resolution LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. The Intelligent LCD function detects the light condition and automatically boosts the LCD backlighting by max. 40% when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine, and adjusts the frame rate when shooting in low-lit situations in addition to using the pixel mixed readout method to secure clarity in such situations. Detecting the lighting condition precisely and automatically controlling the brightness with a total of 11 fine steps, this function gives the display the most appropriate clarity in any situation without using extra energy. The High Angle mode makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as when shooting over a crowd.

00390_fs3-panasonic.jpg

Panasonic Lumix FS3 - Expand fun of photography
The Lumix camera further offers wide variety of options to expand fun of photography. The Panasonic Lumix FS3 newly provides slideshows complete with music. Just select the pictures you want to show and choose the mood that best matches your selection from natural, slow, urban or swing, and you’ll get an emotion-filled slideshow with a variety of slide change effects and matching music without any annoying adjustments. All Lumix cameras can take 1920×1080 pixel high-definition quality photos that are ideal for full-screen viewing on a wide-screen (16:9) HDTV. Panasonic has long focused on making photography more enjoyable, such as by letting people view their images easily on a Panasonic Viera TV with internal SD card slot.

Panasonic FS3 digital camera - Record motion pictures
For the motion picture, the Panasonic Lumix FS3 can record WVGA (848 x 480) motion pictures at 30 frames per second in addition to standard VGA (640 x 480). The WVGA motion picture also fits a wide-screen (16:9) TV perfectly, to offer extremely impressive viewing.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3 - Other Features
The new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3 features a variety of functionalities to expand convenience and fun for users at every stage to enjoy taking beautiful pictures. The energy-efficient Venus Engine IV imaging engine encourages the long battery life of Lumix DMC-FS3 to shoot around 330 shots despite their large, bright LCD on a single battery charge. As design improvements, all new Lumix cameras incorporate a REC/PLAYBACK mode switch. This helps the photographer to instantly switch between recording and playback modes, while always knowing which mode the camera is in. The GUI(Graphic User Interface) has been upgraded to look more futuristic in terms of design and color while maintaining the visibility of characters. A total of 21 scene modes help you to take more beautiful pictures in a wide range of situations.

Panasonic Lumix FS3 camera - Title Edit function
Also interesting is the Title Edit function, which allows text to be input as additional information for the picture, for example, names of children or pets, and travel places. This information, as well as dates, which can be helpful when making a photo album, can be stamped on photos with the Text Stamp function whether you print them yourself at home or have a photo shop do them. Around 50 MB of internal memory is built-in to back up the SDHC/SD Memory Card recording and copying. The major features mentioned above can be quickly understood with the newly installed slideshow program called Demo mode.

Panasonic DMC-FS3 - Camera design & Colours
Dressed in the metal-finished panel, the slim and sleek Panasonic Lumix FS3 offer an enjoyment of taking a great snapshot casually with committed ease of operation even for beginners. The Panasonic FS3 will be available in silver, black blue and pink. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3 is compatible with an optional marine case (DMW-MCFS5) with which users can shoot underwater while scuba diving, etc.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5 - Venus Engine IV

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5 - Fastness
The Venus Engine IV also elevates the detection accuracy and corrective effect in both Mega O.I.S., which prevents hand-shake, and Intelligent ISO Control, which suppresses motion blur. Featured in the DMC-FS5, the multi-task image-processing engine Venus Engine IV supports a super-fast response time. The shutter release time lag is as short as 0.005 second and the camera’s quick response makes it easier to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. In burst shooting mode, the Lumix FS5 can snap 2.5 shots per second at full resolution. And in High-Speed Burst shooting mode, it fires off an incredible 6 shots per second. You also get unlimited consecutive shooting, which lets you keep shooting until the memory card is full. The Venus Engine IV also supports a High Sensitivity mode that lets the Panasonic DMC-FS5 record at a setting of up to ISO 6400, sensitive enough to capture subjects in near-total darkness without using a flash.

Panasonic DMC-FS5 - LCD screen
The DMC-FS5 incorporates an easy-to-see, 2.5-inch 230,000-dot high-resolution LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results.
